Photos from the installation and inauguration of a sculpture for Flatdal, Seljord municipality in Telemark.
This is part of the project "Opplevingsvegen om Nutheim". There was a desire for a sculpture that could activate children and create an identity for the place. Saturday 30th of April there was an inauguration where local children and adults danced around the sculpture, a fantastic inauguration!
The sculpture stands on an elevation in Fladal bathing park between the river Flatdalsåi and Flatdalsvegen. With its bending steel pipes, it communicates with the river and the landscape that surrounds it. At the top of the sculpture you see three masks in green copper. These are the three Gygrir that you can read about in the fairy tale "Tåran i trøppin". They each have their own crown on their heads which symbolizes their strong opinions about the people and the Christianization of Flatdal. "Dei tri gygrin sat on his fjølli and bles on lur te einanen". The green copper masks blow in each horn, and what comes out of the horns is a large sling, not unlike the ornament in the crowns they have on their heads. The sculpture's curving steel pipe bends over several axes and is handmade from 316 steel 130mm pipes, 8mm thicknes. The steel has a brushed surface. The copper meshes are modeled in clay and then 3D scanned, 3D printed in full size and used as a base to weld small copper plates together. The copper is patinated green which is the color the copper would get if it was left outside for more than 20 years. |
